How it Works

Project Turtle's goal is to both simplify your contractor search AND save you money!  Here's how:

I.  Simplify

Project Turtle gives you the tools you need to get your project done. Either visit our Directory and search for contractors in your area by project type, or post your project and let them find you!

Posting is free and easy-

  1. Describe your project.
  2. Upload images and/or Documents (if you choose).
  3. Name the price, if you choose (leave the price blank and your listing will be a straight forward request for bid listing).

II.  Save Money Three Different Ways

  1. Projects posted on Project Turtle are free for EVERYONE. That's right, we don't charge contractors. Other "find-a-contractor" websites sell your listings to contractors. Home improvement professionals are paying thousands of dollars per month for leads posted by homeowners like you. So guess whose actually paying for them? Consider, they sell your lead to three, four or even five contractors and only one can win the bid. So contractors eventually need to cover their losses. Even the guy you hired undoubtedly lost bids on other leads they purchased.
  2. Only the Turtle lets you name your own price. You post it and if there's a contractor in your area willing to accept your price, they'll contact you! Easy as that.
  3. You can save time by using the name your own price feature as a "ceiling". This still let's contractors give you bids, but you instantly eliminate the overpriced ones.

5 Tips To Successfully Naming Your Own Price:

Be Reasonable! No one can work at or below cost. Afterall, they guy's gotta eat.

Be Flexible! The more open you are to various product choices, the easier it will be for a contractor to meet your price.  Contractors have strong relationships with their suppliers.  They get first access to overstocks, wrong special orders and closeouts, so being flexible allows them take advantage of deeply discounted products!

Be Smart! You should only deal with licensed contractors. Always make sure you have a written contract and never pay more than a 30% deposit. Most home improvement work requires a permit from your local government. Call your county or city office to find out what is required and make sure you have any needed permits in your possession BEFORE any work begins.  If a contractor has a problem complying with any of these items, do not use them!

Be Descriptive! The better the information you provide for your project, the more likely it is that a contractor will be able to fully understand what you are looking for. Include dimensions and measurements. Be as clear and concise as possible in describing what you are looking for. If you are open to suggestions on design or materials, mention that as well.  We allow you to post up to eight images absolutely free so as to assist you in explaining your project as clearly as possible.

Be Persistent! If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! Contractors want to do business with you! If you aren’t getting any bites, it’s because you are way too low. Remember tip #1!
