Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

Nothing! We offer our site to you for free!

Why shouldn't I use the other services?

Because they SELL YOUR PROJECT to contractors. "So what?" you may ask? Well, here three problems:

- Contractors will take a financial loss if they do not convert you into a sale. Can you say pushy salespeople coming?

- Many of the websites will call and question you before posting your project. Why? To verify all information is accurate so they know what they are selling contractors is viable. Boy, that's convenient, now you've added more people to deal with through this process!

- Most actually buy and sell your leads to each other! This means your project appears on many different sites. So even after you "take down" your project, it's still active elsewhere... and the calls keep on a comin'!

At Project Turtle you post your project and take it down at your leisure. We use a classifieds model that leaves you in control. We don't interfere and we don't sell your leads! Nor do we sell your personal information!

What if I don't want my personal information published?

Unless you put your email eddress, phone or street address in your own listing, no one will ever see it. Contractors only see the listing you post.  To contact you they must fill out the contact form, which we forward to your email on their behalf.

Are contractors verified by Project Turtle

Don't fall for the "Our contractors are prescreened" promise.  It has nothing to do with quality of work; it means at the time the contractor signed up with that particular service they were licensed, insured, had a working phone, et cetera: all important factors which should not be overlooked, but not relevant to performance.

Instead of giving you a pretty "Seal", we prefer to give you the tools you need to make an informed decision.  So with that in mind, here are some links. The big four include the Better Business Bureau for filed complaints, the MHIC to verify licensing, the Maryland Judiciary for judgments and liens; and the National Sex Offender Registry. It should take five to ten minutes to check all four sites; and if you add ten minutes for each of the three references (typically), your total time investment is 40 minutes. You undoubtedly spent more time than that selecting the carpet color, so don’t get lazy down the stretch. There are plenty of reputable contractors out there, and if you take the right steps now, you might just ensure that you hire one.

What does Shelling/Sheller mean?

A seller Sheller is anyone posting a home improvement project on Project Turtle. Anyone actively posting on our site would be Shelling. We had to do it!

Where is my listing?

Though rare, it can take up to 10 minutes for your listing to appear on the project board. If you have not received a confirmation email within that time, you may want to relist it or contact us to report the problem.

My project fits in many catagories. What should I do?

It is up to you how you want it listed. If you want one price for everything, than select the most appropriate category. Otherwise, you could break the project down into each phase and post in multiple categories. But you should only do this if you are willing to have multiple contractors on your project. Of course Project Turtle is free, so post as much as you like, but please post in the appropriate category.
